Backend Platform Engineer - Hapiko

Job summary

Own and scale the backend platform for a voice-activated sticker printer for children, covering real-time device connections, APIs, job queues, and cloud infrastructure. Harden production systems through autoscaling, observability, cost instrumentation, release engineering, and security and privacy measures, partnering with firmware, ML serving, and Trust and Safety engineers.

• Strong Python and PostgreSQL experience.

• Experience owning production infrastructure end to end.
• Experience scaling a queue-driven or real-time system through an order-of-magnitude increase in traffic.
• Comfort with on-call responsibility and improving system reliability.

Responsibilities

• Own APIs and job queues for sticker requests.
• Maintain reliable real-time connections between devices and backend services.
• Tune autoscaling for traffic spikes and fleet growth in partnership with the ML serving engineer on GPU inference.
• Improve observability with metrics, logs, tracing, and alerts.
• Build cost instrumentation for requests, models, and services.
• Own server-side release engineering, including safe deployments, database migrations, and rollbacks.
• Partner on abuse prevention, device security, and privacy for a children's product.
• Share on-call duties and reduce recurring operational incidents.
