Job summary

Sparta is seeking a Backend/SRE Engineer to design and build backend services while ensuring their reliability and performance. The role involves a 50/50 split between backend engineering and reliability engineering, with a focus on optimizing data processing and operational health.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years as a software or reliability engineer with production systems experience
  • Genuine interest in both backend and reliability engineering
  • Strong in at least one of Kotlin, Java, Python, or TypeScript
  • Solid understanding of AWS services
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code
  • Practical experience with Kubernetes workloads
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling
  • Experience in production incident response
  • Experience defining or working to service-level objectives
  • Comfortable with agent-based development tools
  • Clear communicator and pragmatic problem-solver

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain backend services for real-time and analytical data processing
  • Optimize pipelines and services for low latency, high throughput, and scale
  • Own features end to end, from shaping the approach to running them in production
  • Contribute to design reviews with a clear view on trade-offs
  • Own operational health of services and define metrics for health
  • Improve observability, monitoring, and alerting in Datadog
  • Participate in incident response and address root causes
  • Work with runtime across Lambda, ECS, and EKS
  • Operate data and streaming infrastructure
  • Extend infrastructure as code in AWS CDK and CI/CD pipelines
  • Reduce toil by automating manual tasks and minimizing incidents
