Job summary
The DevOps Engineer role focuses on supporting development operations within a scientific computing and bioinformatics environment. Key responsibilities include GitLab administration, CI/CD pipeline development, containerization using Docker, and automation scripting with languages such as Python and Bash, while collaborating with bioinformatics and infrastructure teams to enhance the reliability and security of scientific applications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related technical or scientific discipline
- Approximately 2+ years of relevant professional, internship, research, or technical experience
- Experience using Git or GitLab for source/version control
- Experience developing, supporting, or working with CI/CD pipelines
- Programming or scripting experience using one or more of the following: Python, Java, Perl, Ruby, Bash/Shell
- Experience with Linux-based computing environments
- Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker, Singularity/Apptainer
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical issues
- Strong analytical, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with software, infrastructure, scientific, and bioinformatics teams
Responsibilities
- Support administration of internal GitLab environments
- Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines
- Support automated build, testing, security scanning, packaging, and deployment processes
- Develop and maintain automation scripts
- Build, deploy, and maintain containerized applications
- Assist with the deployment and management of scientific and bioinformatics applications
- Support installation, upgrade, configuration, testing, and dependency management for scientific software
- Assist with integration of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), free/open-source (F/OSS), and internally developed software
- Support scientific computing tools and applications
- Support deployment, configuration, testing, and maintenance of Nextflow workflows
- Assist bioinformatics teams with modernization or conversion of legacy scientific pipelines
- Support implementation of nf-core or similar scientific workflow standards
- Implement or support automated security and vulnerability scanning
- Assist with container hardening, dependency management, and remediation of identified vulnerabilities
- Develop automation to improve software installation, deployment, configuration, testing, and environment management
- Troubleshoot application, container, pipeline, software-dependency, and deployment issues
- Collaborate with DevOps, bioinformatics, HPC, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and system administration teams
- Develop and maintain technical documentation
