Qualifications
- Several years of practical experience as a Platform Engineer, Cloud Engineer, or SRE in building and operating productive platforms on Google Cloud Platform, or comparable AWS/Azure experience.
- Deep practical expertise with Kubernetes (GKE preferred), including networking, workload identity, autoscaling, multi-tenancy, and Day-2 operations.
- Strong Terraform knowledge, including module design, state management, CI/CD-driven workflows, and ideally experience with Crossplane, Config Connector, Cluster-API, or similar approaches.
- Proficient in core GCP components: VPC, IAM, Cloud Storage, Secret Manager, Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, Artifact Registry.
- Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI preferred; GitHub Actions, Argo CD, or Tekton comparable) and packaging applications via containers and Helm.
- Solid knowledge of observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Loki) and a clear understanding of what to measure at platform vs. application level.
- Security-conscious engineering style: Least-Privilege IAM, secure handling of secrets, image scanning, and understanding of GDPR-relevant data flows in a European multi-country setup.
- Pragmatic Platform-as-a-Product mindset, treating developers as customers and preferring golden paths over individual solutions.
- Experience with event-driven integration patterns and SAP integration landscapes.
- Fluent English required; German or Romanian language skills are a plus.
Responsibilities
- Be one of the first engineers on the new GCP DevOps Platform and collaborate with the Lead Platform Engineer to shape the technical foundation.
- Design, build, and operate GKE-based Kubernetes environments for SAP integrations, e-commerce workloads, and internal applications.
- Develop reusable Terraform modules and Crossplane compositions to create golden paths for application teams.
- Implement core platform services: Networking, IAM, Secret Manager, Container Registry, Observability, and CI/CD components for application pipelines.
- Integrate platform capabilities into the Backstage Developer Portal for self-service access to cluster namespaces, secrets, and deployment pipelines.
- Establish operational excellence practices: SLOs, alerting, runbooks, and an effective on-call model for platform components.
- Contribute to technical standards, code review culture, and Architecture Decision Records within the hybrid platform team in Bucharest and Ulm.
- Actively drive cultural change from strict Dev/Ops separation to DevOps teams with end-to-end responsibility, supported by a strong platform and clear interfaces.
