Senior Data Platform Engineer

Job summary

The Data Platform Engineer owns the reliability, administration, security, and performance of an enterprise data platform centered on BigQuery, Google Cloud Platform, and Dataplex, with Fivetran ingestion as a key dependency. The role administers IAM and sensitive-data policy tags, monitors end-to-end ELT integrity, advises engineering and analytics teams on BigQuery best practices, and leads platform incident response, root-cause analysis, and operational documentation.

Qualifications

• Hands-on production experience with Google Cloud Platform and BigQuery.
• Strong BigQuery knowledge, including cost optimization, partitioning, clustering, and slot management.
• Hands-on Dataplex experience with policy tags, taxonomies, column-level masking, and fine-grained IAM roles.
• Experience with GCP IAM, service accounts, and least-privilege access administration.
• Experience operating or supporting an ELT ingestion tool such as Fivetran, Airbyte, or CData.
• At least 3 years of data platform or cloud platform operations experience.
• Strong SQL skills and data-modeling fluency for troubleshooting raw, staging, and mart layers.
• Ability to use the GCP CLI and Python or Bash scripting to automate platform administration and access workflows.
• Experience in a regulated or PII-sensitive data environment.

Responsibilities

• Monitor Fivetran connectors and investigate warnings, failures, delays, and abnormal loads into BigQuery.
• Administer BigQuery IAM, service accounts, project and dataset structures, cost visibility, and optimization.
• Manage user onboarding, role changes, and offboarding for BigQuery and Dataplex.
• Advise engineering and analytics teams on BigQuery partitioning, clustering, query optimization, and cost management.
• Evaluate new BigQuery and GCP features and promote adoption when they improve reliability, performance, or cost.
• Administer Dataplex policy tags and taxonomies for column-level PII and sensitive-data masking.
• Monitor end-to-end ELT integrity, completeness, freshness, and performance from ingestion through BigQuery.
• Handle ingestion and BigQuery incidents, lead root-cause analysis, and develop durable fixes and operational runbooks.
