Job summary
HMRC's Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to join the Digital Forensic Infrastructure Team (DFI). This role involves providing third-line support, managing diverse systems, and contributing to the future technical direction within a dynamic team. The successful candidate will play an integral role in His Majesty's Government's fight against serious and organised crime.

Qualifications

- Infrastructure background with technical understanding of virtual machines, datacentres, and environments.
- Demonstrable knowledge or experience with network technologies, including building, configuring, administering, and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions (computing, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, COTS, open-source packages).
- Knowledge or exposure to virtualization technologies such as VMware, vSphere, or Horizon.
- Demonstrable knowledge or experience of Microsoft Windows domains and associated services (A/D, GPOs, domain trusts, DNS, DHCP, PKI).
- Experience supporting planning, installation, maintenance, and improvement of hardware services within a data centre.
- Demonstrable experience in breaking down problems, diagnosing root causes, and troubleshooting across different technology capabilities.
- Awareness of information security and security controls to mitigate threats in solutions and services.
- Strong communication skills for client/customer-facing roles, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences (verbally and in writing).
- Qualifications in Information Technology or a related field, and/or practical experience supporting an IT environment.
- Knowledge or experience of Cisco, ACI, NXOS, or Fortigate firewalls.
- ITIL Foundation Qualification or demonstrable understanding of ITIL Lifecycle Standards.
- Exposure to or experience with DevOps processes and practices.
- Experience working with Gitlab or other CI/CD tools.
- Experience working with programming/IaC languages (e.g., Powershell, Python, Terraform).
- Exposure to or experience with project management tools (e.g., Jira, MS Project).
- Exposure to or experience with version control systems.
- Full UK Driving Licence (with reasonable adjustment consideration for disabilities).
Responsibilities
- Ensure robust, reliable, high-performance systems and services meet business needs.
- Build, administer, maintain, and monitor diverse systems including servers, storage, endpoint management, networks, telephony, and business applications.
- Provide third-line support and project delivery across IT systems.
- Collaborate with other teams and departments to achieve shared objectives.
- Influence future technical direction within the team.
- Provide 3rd-line support for incidents, service requests, tasks, and problems, adhering to ITIL methodology and SLAs.
- Support datacentre management activities, including capacity and availability management.
- Install, manage, and maintain end-user devices in a Windows environment.
- Participate in the assurance program to review, maintain, and improve assets.
- Assist in providing outstanding services and consistent capability levels.
- Provide technical support and assistance to projects, ensuring non-functional requirements and continual service improvement.
- Maintain familiarity with installed hardware, software, and IT infrastructure procedures.
- Describe basic technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Provide verbal updates and produce written user documentation for BAU tasks and projects.
- Participate in technical workshops to assess business requirements, identify requirements, and quantify benefits for service changes.
