Job summary

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is seeking a Lead Linux Infrastructure Engineer. This role involves combining strong technical skills with a consultative approach to lead a team of engineers, ensuring services are integrated, delivered, and operated to a high standard. The successful candidate will work with enterprise Linux systems and develop an understanding of government security guidance to deliver secure Linux infrastructure services.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a Lead Engineer or Tech team lead role in Linux Engineering within a complex IT Infrastructure.
  • Experience leading a team, managing incidents, problems, changes, and allocating work.
  • Experience acting as the senior technical Linux resource across the engineering function.
  • Experience with virtualized networking principles and platforms (VMware/Hyper-V).
  • Advanced experience with Bash and Python.
  • Good understanding of IT On-Prem and Cloud-based tooling infrastructure.
  • Experience managing Linux certificates across the environment.
  • Good experience with Squid.
  • Responsible for driving all system upgrades across Linux.
  • Experience with open-source Ansible automation tooling.
  • Good understanding of troubleshooting Linux issues to 4th line.
  • Demonstrable experience with Agile / DevOps working practices.
  • Experience with systems monitoring infrastructure.
  • Working knowledge of Confluence, Jira, and JSM.
  • Sound understanding of database technologies: PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQL.
  • Relevant Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Security, or Systems Engineering qualification, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in a Cloud Infrastructure Environment (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience managing CEPH Storage or Linux storage environments.
  • Experience with Confluence, Jira, and JSM administration and upgrades.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain operational SLAs for Linux infrastructure incidents, including physical and virtual servers, DNS, NTP, RHEL Directory Services, Proxy, database, Satellite, and CEPH Infrastructure.
  • Monitor, alert, and maintain RosaLinux Infrastructure across all environments.
  • Lead the Linux team in supporting BAU and Project implementation activities, ensuring necessary artifacts are in place.
  • Implement strategic and technical roadmaps for aligned Linux Infrastructure and hosted applications, ensuring infrastructure is up to date.
  • Ensure all new components and installations meet or exceed RSO internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Work within the organization's DevOps strategy to provide automated solutions.
  • Own responsibility for changes within technical discipline and ensure implementation according to agreed business processes.
  • Monitor trends to proactively respond to issues and support business needs.
  • Develop documentation, processes, and policies to ensure governance and reporting.
  • Manage all Incident, Problem, and Risk within technical discipline.
  • Assist junior team members with learning and development.
  • Liaise with vendors and product owners on product support and roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with other Lead Engineers across the Engineering function and support initiatives.
