Job summary
The Linux Infrastructure Engineer will maintain, develop, and optimize Linux and HPUX environments, ensuring critical systems run smoothly and supporting colleagues. This role involves administering Linux environments, handling escalations, and contributing to disaster recovery testing.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Linux (RHEL, SLES or similar)
- Experience administering HPUX environments (preferred but not essential)
- Knowledge of virtualization technologies such as VMware or Hyper-V
- Solid understanding of networking (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewalls)
- Over five years of experience in the UK IT landscape
- Great communication skills with a friendly and collaborative approach
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize independently
- Clear and concise documentation skills
- Calm, adaptable approach in an ever-changing environment
- Willingness to travel to other sites when needed
Responsibilities
- Administer and optimize Linux environments (RHEL, SLES, Ubuntu or similar)
- Deliver OS upgrades, patching cycles, kernel tuning, and performance improvements
- Develop and maintain automation scripts to drive efficiency
- Support the migration from HPUX to Linux
- Handle third-line escalations from the service desk
- Monitor alerting tools and take action on critical warnings
- Contribute ideas in team meetings to resolve root causes and improve reliability
- Identify risks relating to manufacturing, servers, or capacity and escalate as needed
- Lead or participate in regular disaster recovery testing
- Collaborate across locations, sometimes traveling to support issue resolution
- Effectively manage workload, balancing tickets and in-flight projects
- Act as a key point of escalation for complex software or hardware issues
