Job summary
Imperial College London is seeking a skilled and motivated Platform Engineer to join their Infrastructure team. This role involves taking ownership of platforms and services underpinning core server infrastructure, with responsibilities including designing, building, automating, and operating resilient compute, storage, and backup environments. The successful candidate will contribute to the evolution of the infrastructure strategy, ensuring platforms are reliable, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational needs.

Qualifications
- Proven experience managing enterprise server infrastructure in a complex environment
- Good understanding of Windows Server and/or Linux operating systems
- Knowledge of infrastructure monitoring, alerting, and observability tooling
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage competing priorities effectively
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to work collaboratively across technical teams
- Experience with public cloud infrastructure (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud)
- Knowledge of security and compliance standards relevant to infrastructure operations
- Experience working within ITIL-aligned service management environments
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of platforms and services underpinning core server infrastructure
- Design, build, automate, and operate resilient compute, storage, and backup environments
- Deliver secure, scalable, and highly available infrastructure services
- Support critical research, teaching, and professional services systems
- Contribute to the evolution of infrastructure strategy
- Ensure platforms remain reliable, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational needs
- Manage, maintain, and continually improve enterprise server infrastructure platforms
- Manage virtualisation, compute, storage, and backup technologies
- Build, configure, and manage physical and virtual server infrastructure
- Manage on-premise and cloud-integrated environments
- Support and optimize enterprise storage platforms
- Ensure performance, resilience, scalability, and effective lifecycle management of storage
- Manage backup and recovery platforms
- Perform testing, monitoring, retention, and disaster recovery processes for backups
- Monitor platform health, capacity, and performance
- Proactively identify opportunities for optimization and service improvement
- Support incident response, root cause analysis, and problem management activities
- Work with security, networking, cloud, and application teams
- Ensure infrastructure services meet operational and compliance requirements
- Produce and maintain clear technical documentation, operational procedures, and knowledge articles
