Job summary
The Principal AI Platform Engineer leads the design and hands-on development of a self-service AI platform, enabling data scientists, ML engineers, and application teams to build, deploy, and operate production workloads independently. The role establishes engineering standards and reusable platform patterns, and builds infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipelines on AWS, including SageMaker and Bedrock. It also supports secure, observable, cost-transparent operations, production MLOps and GenAI capabilities, and engineers’ technical development through mentoring and design reviews.

Qualifications
- At least 8 years designing, building, and operating scalable data and AI/ML platforms in large enterprise environments.
- Demonstrated technical leadership on complex platform initiatives.
- Hands-on cloud-native engineering experience with AWS, including SageMaker, Bedrock, S3, and IAM.
- Experience designing and managing secure, governed, and cost-optimised AI/ML platforms.
- Experience establishing platform engineering practices, reusable templates, and developer experience tooling.
- Production MLOps experience across pipelines, model registries, feature and artefact management, serving, and monitoring.
- Generative AI experience with prompt engineering, LLM orchestration, RAG, evaluation, and guardrails.
- Ability to translate architecture and product requirements into technical designs, implementation plans, and backlog items.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence across a matrixed organisation.
- Ability to deliver complex initiatives autonomously, navigate ambiguity, and mentor engineers.
Responsibilities
- Own the AI platform's technical design.
- Set engineering standards, patterns, and reusable platform approaches.
- Build and maintain production code, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Operationalise the platform on AWS SageMaker and Bedrock.
- Enable self-service onboarding and independent operation of production AI workloads.
- Build security, observability, reproducibility, cost transparency, and responsible AI controls into the platform.
- Conduct design reviews, pair with engineers, and mentor team members.
