Principal Platform Engineer (AWS) Hybrid — Sydney / Wollongong

Job summary

Lead platform engineering and DevOps strategy for secure, scalable AWS environments, shaping architecture, standards, and roadmaps while remaining hands-on. Build internal developer platforms, self-service infrastructure, and automation; support AI/ML and LLM workloads; and improve security, reliability, developer productivity, and cloud cost efficiency across engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience designing and architecting production-grade AWS environments.
• Hands-on platform engineering experience building internal developer platforms, self-service infrastructure, and reusable engineering capabilities.
• Expertise in DevOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, and GitLab.
• Experience with microservices, containers, serverless technologies, and distributed systems.
• Experience managing AI/ML infrastructure and LLM platforms, including model deployment, AI service integration, or orchestration.
• Programming and automation skills in Python, Go, or Java.
• Understanding of cloud security, identity and access management, networking, and compliance frameworks.
• Experience with developer portals such as Backstage or similar tools.
• Ability to influence technical strategy, mentor engineers, and collaborate with senior stakeholders.
• Valid NV1 clearance or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

• Define architecture, standards, and roadmaps for AWS platforms, DevOps tooling, and internal developer platforms.
• Design scalable self-service infrastructure and developer tooling.
• Establish practices for CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, repository management, and deployment automation.
• Design and manage AI/ML infrastructure, LLM platforms, model deployment pipelines, and AI service orchestration.
• Embed security, governance, scalability, and operational resilience into platform architecture and engineering practices.
• Partner with senior technology leaders, mentor engineers, and influence architectural decisions across product teams.
• Improve platform efficiency, reliability, and AWS resource utilisation.
• Evaluate emerging cloud, platform engineering, and AI technologies.
