Job summary

The Uni*** is seeking a Research Software Engineer to develop and improve systems, tooling, and automation for their BEAR services. The role involves collaborating with developers and researchers to enhance operational efficiency and support scientific computing across the university.

Qualifications

• Degree level education or equivalent experience.
• Python software engineering skills.
• Experience in Linux environments.
• Experience with version control workflows (e.g. Git).
• Familiarity with modern software delivery practices, including CI/CD.
• Ability to automate processes effectively.
• Proven problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Self-motivated learner with updated skills.
• Ability to manage and prioritize workload.
• Evidence of literacy and numeracy.
• Knowledge of Equality Act 2010 and related duties.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain web applications for BEAR and Baskerville NCR services.
• Develop and maintain Python-based middleware and integration libraries.
• Contribute to technical design and implementation of solutions.
• Deploy and maintain applications on BEAR Cloud infrastructure.
• Develop and improve automated workflows and integrations.
• Contribute to improvement of testing practices and CI pipelines.
• Collaborate with senior colleagues to prioritize development activities.
• Participate in peer code review activities.
• Respond to user support requests.
• Participate in BEAR triage and housekeeping rotas.
• Foster a fair and equitable workplace.
• Support the University’s sustainability agenda.
