Senior Reliability Engineer (Remote)

Job summary

Ensures the resilience and availability of applications and systems by embedding reliability practices across product teams and contributing to architecture, risk assessments, and design for failure. Drives SLO and error-budget adoption, incident response, root-cause analysis, automation, observability, capacity planning, and chaos engineering, while advising on reliability priorities and mentoring engineers. The role spans IBM Mainframe environments, cloud platforms, and multi-region applications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in MIS, computer science, or a related field.
• At least 4 years of software development experience.
• Strong programming skills in one or more of Java, Python, Go, or Node.js.
• In-depth knowledge of systems architecture, operating system internals, and networking fundamentals.
• Knowledge of application design patterns, event-driven architecture, database schemas, and testing strategies.
• Experience troubleshooting and tuning multi-region applications.
• Experience with IBM Mainframe, including TSO/ISPF, JCL, batch job scheduling, CICS transaction processing, and RACF security.
• Experience with at least one cloud platform: GCP, AWS, or Azure.
• Experience with monitoring techniques and tools such as CloudWatch, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or tracing.

Responsibilities

• Drive adoption of error budgets and Service Level Objectives across products.
• Lead incident response, conduct root-cause analyses, and implement preventative measures.
• Establish operational practices through automation and process improvements.
• Drive reliability, observability, and efficiency across product teams throughout the software lifecycle.
• Identify recurring toil and opportunities for automation and risk reduction.
• Participate in rotating on-call coverage and conduct blameless retrospectives.
• Proactively identify potential failures through chaos engineering, failure-mode analysis, and design reviews.
• Advise on capacity planning and assess system behavior and resource consumption.
• Partner with product managers to prioritize reliability improvements using service-level indicators, objectives, and error budgets.
• Mentor and assist engineers.
