Job summary

Serco is seeking a VMware Virtualization Infrastructure Engineer to design, deploy, and operate a production VMware vSphere virtualization infrastructure for meteorological satellite systems.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience
  • Expert-level experience in VMware vSphere administration
  • Experience with enterprise server platforms like Cisco UCS, Dell, HPE ProLiant, and Lenovo
  • Experience with storage technologies including SAN, Ceph, and GPFS
  • Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery procedures
  • Knowledge of infrastructure security hardening
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes and persistent storage concepts
  • Experience with Ansible, Chef, or Puppet for automation
  • Experience with Terraform for Infrastructure as Code
  • Experience with Git version control
  • Knowledge of ITIL service management principles
  • Experience with Vault or Conjur for secrets management
  • Experience integrating VMware with OpenStack and public cloud platforms
  • Experience in 24/7 operational environments
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the virtualisation infrastructure and identify issues
  • Act as the primary point of contact for VMware vSphere operations
  • Participate in mission operations coordination meetings
  • Maintain VMware vSphere configuration baselines and documentation
  • Administer enterprise server platforms running VMware vSphere
  • Monitor infrastructure health through system logs and telemetry
  • Administer Ethernet and Fibre Channel switching infrastructure
  • Plan and execute VMware vSphere upgrades and reconfigurations
  • Install, configure, and optimise VMware vSphere and virtual infrastructure
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and Terraform
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for upgrades and configurations
  • Ensure VMware vSphere environments can be restored after failures
  • Define and verify backup and recovery procedures for virtual machines
  • Conduct disaster recovery testing and validation
  • Liaise with hardware vendors and VMware support
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and performance issues
  • Provide on-call support for operational continuity
  • Implement automation solutions for recurring tasks
  • Support VMware vSphere platform evolution and enhancements
  • Collaborate on Kubernetes integration with VMware vSphere
